Okay Everybody!

I am really, actually, finally going to start using my new lj account exclusively.

SO,

If you want to see my posts you should add scruffers to your friends list. I will be adding pretty much everybody that's on my list right now shortly, unless... i don't know who you are XD If you want to be added, just drop me a comment.

I will be posting all fursuit stuff publicly, and other miscellaneous or personal stuff friends only. Also i now have an AIM screen name which i will log onto occasionally to talk about fursuit/costume construction stuff (NOT fursuit commission stuff, that's what e-mail is for), and also just to chat with you fine folk :3 So add FelisScruffius to your buddy list if you want to chat sometime.

Shit dudes... there's fire all around us. We seem to be in a safe spot for now, and there's federal help on the way, but there is deffinetly an enormous wildfire mere miles from us right now. The news keeps telling us to not breath the air O.o but we haven't been evacuated like a lot of people in the area.

Been turning in applications all week, i have an interview tomorrow at Deidrich's Coffee, and i'm pretty sure i'm a shoe-in :D (they just lost like 3 people, the rest of their staff is in high school, and i've got 4 years experience making coffee and want about 30-40 hours a week)

I also turned in an application at a Micheal's and it also sounded like i had a good shot at getting hired there, 'cause the manager had a big lesbian crush on me XD That'll depend more on what kind of hours Diedrich's wants to give me and/or what kind of employee discount they offer at Micheal's (ummm... discounts on almost everything i need to make fursuits except the fur? Yes plz!)

I'll let y'all know how this goes after my interview tomorrow *crosses fingers* c'mon steady paycheck!

New username...

So i'm going to change my lj username shortly so as to solidify my new online handle (Scruffy) and make it easier to recognize me from my other online galleries, like DA and FA. Plus I'm just way past due for a revamp of everything (including my fursuit building techniques, but more on that later).

What i want to know is what my new username should be! My standard 'ScruffyAlleyCat' has been taken on lj along with most permutations of regular old 'Scruffy' so i need help deciding what the new one should be. I came up with these (which are available):

-Felius_Scruffius
-Scruffers
-Scruffy_Stuff

I'm leaning towards the first two, what do you guys think? I'm hoping that it will be relatively recognizable as me. Any other ideas?

So a lot in my life has changed this last month. Me and Max moved halfway across the country, which is a really huge step for both of us. Max spent one year in Dallas, but other than that, we've lived our whole lives in Kansas... and we've come to the conclusion... that we fucking hate Kansas... But we LOVE California so far! :D

and now to sum up everything else which has happened in a list:

-Holy Shite! I have a freaking degree! Anybody wanna hire a ceramic sculptor? >.>;

Introducing Scruffy!!!

Been a while since i've updated, but I finally have some art done and scanned for my new character! This is the design for Scruffy:

there's a little more art, and a preview of my latest fursuit project, which will have to be done later than expected, because of all the stuff there is to get done for the move.

I will be primarily associating with this character from now on. Mostly because there is already a (well established and much better) fursuit builder who already uses the handle Shadow, and i just wanted a better design for my character. It's the sort of thing i might revamp from time to time anyhow, but i'll probably stick with the new handle 'Scruffy'.

This didn't save in the proper format, so the colors are all screwy :P but it gives you a good idea of how the markings look.

And just cause you guys are special, here's a look at the dragon i've got in the works :3

... you're gonna love this band...

this is my new favorite song, i've been playing it over and over again in my head. these guys are fucking amazing, just listen to that one line develop... the band is called 'battles' the song is titled 'atlas' the album is titled 'mirrored' and it's all about reflection, repetition, and distortion. you can see how they simultaneously play and synthesize their instruments... amazing...

i get to see these guys in KC on the 10th in a tiny little bar. holy fucking shit i can't wait.

alright, as promised i am posting up the 'furry' mix i put together some time ago. this is very loosely furry themed, some of the songs just have vauge associations with animals, (double points if the name of the artist included animals somehow) i didn't want to get so wrapped up in the theme that it turned out to be a crappy mix, so i took generous theme liberties.

that's the cover, and i drew pencil sketches for each track. i'm still working on/need to scan a couple sketches for some of the tracks, so i'll post some of my favorites now, and the rest later.

i can't guarantee this mix will be completely liked by anyone, as my music tastes are pretty eclectic. i'm of the mind that any style can be used well, so if a song or band can impress me then chances are i'll like it no matter what kind of music it is, but if you're the type who likes music by genre, probably you'd get bored with at least some of it. there's some industrial, some electronic, some record scratching, some wailing girl singer, some orchestra and harp yadda yadda yadda... it does lean pretty heavily towards the 'rock' end of things though.

the liars are the best new industrial band i've heard. this song inspired this mix with the lyrics "i, no, longer, want to be a man, i, want, to be a horse... i, want, a, tail, give, me, a, tail..."

thinking fellers are a wacky art-rock group that totally rules.

i used to say modest mouse was my favorite band, though i think i've broken up with them. their new albums are just so bland compared to how they used to write music. check out their first several albums, though, they're amazing. this song is from 'the moon and antarctica' one of the last projects of theirs i really loved.

tv on the radio is from new york, and have recently enjoyed some popularity. this is the coolest song about werewolves i've ever heard.

ugly cassanova is another project of isaac brock, lead singer of modest mouse. very cool. this is a beautiful song which makes excellent use of singing in rounds.

kid koala may qualify as my favorite dj. for sure he's the best record scratcher i've come across, though this song isn't the best example as it's a little more down tempo (but mentions koalas!) he also illustrates graphic novels and small comics... he's a ninja dj... what a badass.

moondog deserved two tracks. he was a street musician in new york, and is just unbelievably good.

deerhoof. hard, loud, gritty rock music with this tiny little girl singer who just screams her fucking head off.

joanna newsome plays the harp alongside a full orchestra. her music is floaty and lyrical and downright amazing. she is fabulous poet. i could just read her lyrics and be floored. this is a tragic lovesong about a bear who dances with an organ grinder.

i wonder if anyone will actually read any of this... XD if you did, thanks!!

Well, my internet connection is FINALLY back up but there's no telling for how long. Also school ate my life for a while there but hey, 3 more credit hours this summer and i'll have a degree :O crazy...

I guess I've been out of the loop for a couple months, as I've been taking some seriously labor intensive classes. So between no internet, casting iron, and sleeping I haven't made it to lj much, nor have I had the time to do much work on fursuit projects. Finals are over though, so I have finally gotten started on the dragon. Pictures up when things begin to take shape, in the meantime here's the concept art for it that i drew before school took over:

There are a few things i may alter about it depending on the amounts of material and time i have. The webbing for his ears will be gray fleece probably, and his eyes will be blue-gray. Not sure if he'll get wings or not, but they'd be gray and purple too, and possibly have yellow stars on them (the diamond kind, not the 5-point kind).

I love this design, i wanted something a little on the simpler side from my other designs, but still challenging. I hope i get to do wings...

My internet is down again, so i have to post from campus, but here's just a few things i've wanted to post up this week:

~I've decided to change my handle to 'Scruffy' for several reasons. first, there's already a (well established and way better) fursuit builder on lj who uses the handle 'shadow' and i'd rather not create confusion. Also i picked the name 'catdyke' for reasons which no longer really suit me, and i'd like to consolidate my username and my character's name. Scruffy just fits me much better anyhow, and i don't know of any other fursuit makers who use that name. So i'm beginning the process of setting up a new journal, and re-introducing myself and my character. May take a while to fully materialize, but i hope to have everything re-set around the time we get moved in to our new place in California.

~Shipped out my first head commission this weekend :D here's a sneak peek at the (low-tech) 'airbrushing.' I'll probably post to the crit community sometime since they helped out so much. I love the way it finished the look of it, i'm so happy with this project :)

~I have the design for the dragon i plan to build next finalized and scanned, as soon as i can get it to the internet i'll post it here. I think that's it, i'll do my best to catch up with everybody whenever we disconnect our crappy unreliable community-run internet server, and go crawling back to the corporate server we had before who will be sure to gouge us silly with re-connect fees... woo-hoo!

i've been meaning to post doodles for a while but i can't find one of my sketchbooks anywhere! it has most of the furry cartoons i draw so i don't have a lot of the ones i hoped to put up, but for now, here's the stuff i alread had scanned

these are obviously not polished ideas, and since i'll be doing the dragon in purple and black these ones will probably never materialize as they're drawn here. i'll probably use some of the same markings from the lion on the dragon (designs for that up as soon as i have them finalized) i thought they looked pretty nice all colored in and stuff, and that the mane on the lion was a pretty neat idea.

i would like to get around to doing some kind of cat soonish, but i'm getting itchy for something a tad more challenging after this dragon i have in mind, deffinetly gearing up to do some digitigrade asap. perhaps a gryphon next... ooo! or a hell-cat! two birds one stone, woo!

*sigh* Perhaps i spoke too soon about our internet getting fixed, as it's still been a bitch and a half lately. Taking forever to load pages and then usually cutting out every 10 minutes or so. It took me 30 minutes just to post a stupid comment on myspace earlier! So that's why i've been so quiet lately, half the time i get comments all written out, and then the net crashes before i can post 'em. It seems to be behaving for now though, so i thought i'd do a quick update on stuff i've been doing/planning.

Fursuit projects:
Finally finishing up the yellow head commissioned by spiritwolven i'll get pictures up once the neck and zipper are done being attatched. As for new projects, i've been doing more drawing than building, because school has been kicking my ass this semester, and that's about all i've been able to work on. I've got a ton of long pile purple fur, and a fair bit of black along with assorted scraps.
I'd been planning on making it into a maine-coon (long haired tabby cat) and i built a foam frame for it, (pictures soon) but since max and i are moving to L.A. in august, i really need to make sure that i can sell it fairly quickly so we don't have to haul it across the country with the rest of our stuff. SO, i'm thinking about doing a dragon instead, as i think a purple dragon would sell better than a purple cat. Gonna take a crack at some more dragon-ey bat-like wings this time around.

Drawing:
Been doing lots and lots of it. Gonna post it soon. Internet too stupid to get me that far on photobucket yet. I think i've been improving, need to start doing some serious work on my outlining, and get some better pens for linework.
Fursuit concept sketches will be up soon too. I have at least three ideas i've been working on to do after the dragon. Not sure which one will materialize first though.
Those of you who i made icons for, as soon as i can get them up on photobucket, i'll toss 'em your way. Everybody else, my offer still stands for FREE ICONS OR OTHER DOODLES if you're interested! My drawing isn't great or anything, but that's why they're free :3

I guess that's about it, spring break is next week, so hopefully i'll have a little time to get at least some of this stuff posted. hope you're all doing well!

hope i haven't missed anything earth shattering, my internet has been down for over a week, and we're finally getting it back.

in other good computer news me and max just recently bought a SCANNER!!! i am so thrilled, i made a new set of icons for myself :D this one deffinetly gives a better image than all the crap ones on campus i've been using.

so... ANYBODY WANT AN ICON?! i'm so excited i've been drawing like crazy, i already made icons for joecifur and lovesickeskimo (made one for jess too :3) similar to the icon i used for this post, only with your name instead of a heart. i'll get them to you guys as soon as i re-size them to proper icon proprotions. anybody else want one? i'm just looking for excuses to use this thing.

Classes have started again, and i'm so unbelievably pumped for this semester :D

They finally decided to offer a theory class in the art department, instead of the english department, which means it's geared more towards visual learners (like me!) and will cover theory and criticism as they apply to the visual arts. I kinda know some about literary theory from max, but this is more my strong suit, and i can't wait to get through the readings. We've only had 2 classes so far and i'm already loving it! When i try to get into this sort of stuff with most of my professors they just look at me like my eyes are crossed or something...

here's an outline of one of our first readings if anyone's interested, i know at least some of you have a mild interest in this sort of thing:

1. We are inundated in advertisements and publicity images which have the effects of providing a ‘climate’ of false realities to be chased, always just out of reach through endless cycles of consuming.
a. dynamic images; static spectator
b. a language for proposing and manufacturing glamour
- places you in the position of envying your future-self being envied
- glamour=the happiness of being envied
c. feeds upon real things and consumables by playing on our desires for power, sex and money with the promise of future reward.
d. uses established ideas about freedom of choice (between consumables) and freedom of enterprise (between companies)

2. There is a direct continuity in many of the ways publicity images and oil paintings use visual languages.
a. the use of art in publicity images tends to convey a sense of “…cultural authority, a form of dignity,” (p. 135)
b. similar visual vocabularies of postures, compositions, representations of men and women, symbolic uses of nature…. (list on p.138)
c. uses nostalgia and standard widespread views to sell ideas of future happiness
-does not require
d. the tradition of oil painting is largely a record of people surrounded by the objects which illustrate their wealth and prosperity.
- key differences between oil painting and publicity images:
_oil paintings_
+ represent the present moment for the future to see
+ envy of others is not important to the identities of the subjects
+ served as a record
+ addressed to those who made money
_publicity images_
+ “sells the past to the future” the present is insufficient
+ plays on envy emotions and general feelings of anxiety regarding money
+ addressed to those who spend money
+ serves as a place holder for actions

3. Publicity makes consumables into place-holders for political choice, and obscures events occurring elsewhere by keeping the consumer focused on consuming.
a. The political and social climate of the developed capitalist nations creates a sense of individual powerlessness coupled with a reinforcement which lends itself to fantasies and day dreams which publicity images entertain, and promise the possible or temporary fulfillment of.
- workplace environments often provide dull and/or unfulfilling present state for lower to middle class workers, whose unsatisfactory present state gives way to day dreams which publicity can pander to.
- social envy as a widespread emotion
b. because publicity relies upon an unsatisfactory present to sell the idea of a perfect future, it has the effect of constantly deferring real experience and events from being realized in the present, thereby keeping the consumer stagnant, and uninformed of actual events worldwide.
c. fulfillment of the false promises publicity offers is ultimately unnecessary and it is in fact the personal relevance of the fantasies which remains important.

i'm also taking an open lab in ceramics, clay and glaze formulation, and a FOUNDRY class! whee! lots of fire this semester!

wooo

what a holiday season. lessee.... grandma finaly died.... don't mean to sound callous, she'd been begging the doctors to let her die for about a month, colon cancer is a nasty business. my parents' ceiling almost caved in... good thing dad used to work construction. home was a particularly surreal experience this year, though not as entirely bad as i had expected considering the circumstances, everyone was pretty much in recovery so it was mostly a lot of drinking... and smoking. good solid quality time with the siblings though.

had a hartwarming conversation with my ex-girlfriend from high school. she said that she will still always hang out with me even though she'll have to lie to her psycho new-girlfriend about it... she added the psycho. told her she could come hang out with me and my totally-sane-girlfriend anytime. didn't get to hang out with my old friends as much as i'd have liked, but i still got to see them.

as for me, i've been drinking brandy and watching home movies (the cartoon, not actual home movies) and finishing up my current fursuit projects while max has been to her home. there will be pictures soon. it's a pretty bad-ass head if i do say so myself.

happy new year! max gets back tomorrow, thank goodness.

Here's the jawset i've been working on for my current fursuit head project for spiritwolven

I think this is deffinetly the best jawset i've done so far. Most realistic looking teeth, and also the best fit. Now he just needs eyes and fur! i can't wait for this guy to come together, it's been really fun to build.

Here is the foam frame for the wings i'm making for coyotewings these will be totally covered in real black feathers, and it's my mission to make them absolutely stunning :3

I have a whole bunch of little surprises up my sleeve that will be making apperances soon, but for now they're a secret >.> What could they be you ask? Well, i'm not telling, but my current customers will be the first to benefit from them ;3

I slept all freaking day today. I think i'm finally all caught up on sleep now though. This last week i've been running kilns non-stop... till 6 am... Here are the rest of the drawings i scanned the other day, starting out with my ShadowCat emoticons so now you know what i look like when i make these faces at you :P

Just a little excersise in expressions which i think is my strongest point in drawing, and my favorite part. This was really fun, i want to do more of these :D

I've also got some WIP drawings for joecifur's x-mas contest
These are both mostly colored by now, scanning on campus is just a nightmare right now though. I think they're quite cute though. :3

And just a couple drawings of tiresius and adonis

Bit of a revamp for tiresius' markings, but i like this version. I thought about making the underbelly cream, but i opted for light grey instead. You can see all of Adonis' markings here too, but i think i'm gonna scratch the raspberry claws also in favor of light grey, it looks too much like nail polish which just plain isn't me at all.

My rubber mold tutorial was pre-empted on fursuit so nevermind about that, but i've got a jawset to show off as soon as i get another scan done and run it all by the buyer. Oh, and i've started on another pair of feathered wings for coyotewings so WIP photos of that soon too.

whew! now to just get through finals week. all the hard stuff for my projects is done... So to celebrate, here's a little comic sequence i've been fiddling with. not entirely finished, but i like it so far :3 it's supposed to be silly more than serious btw, i think the punchline should have to do with me doing something extremely clumsy...

This is just a nice little introduction bit for my character, and i wanted to start doing more strips centered around my coffeeshop, as it's full of characters.

This one's inspired mostly by people's tendancy to assume that the largest coffee has the most caffine, or is stronger, or in some way makes them a big bad coffee drinker. When in fact, if we're talking about an espresso drink, medium usually has the same amout of coffe/caffine as a large, the large just has more milk and is therefore more dilluted. Really hardcore coffee drinkers get small drinks because they're stronger, but people's instinct to grab for the biggest one usually wins out. I myself prefer regular brew coffee :3

more doodles later today probably. oh, and my rubber molds should be done tomorrow so expect that tutorial to be up in the next coulpe of days.

I JUST HIT A CAR!!!

only a fender bender, and totally his fault, (he pulled right out in front of me from a gas station) but this is the first wrek of any kind i've been in since i totaled my parents' van when i was 16. so i'm a little shaken... and i just plain don't want to have to deal with this right now DX and now i'm late to class, so i'd better go.

the progress i've made on my current fursuit head, he might need a lower jaw adjustment. he's also got some notebook paper eyes where his taxidermy eyes will be.

here's my march hare costume set, i only ended up wearing the tail and ears to work halloween night, so it's still pretty much unused, i might put some pawpads on it and put it up for auction soon.

i made a little teddy bear of max! i like the way the head turned out, but the body turned out kind of strangely shaped, i think i know how to fix it next time. mostly this was just good practice for sewing.

okay, gotta go to work now... coffee coffee coffee!

would've posted these yesterday, but everything got real busy real fast... meaning i did a bunch of work, then went to see a movie with max, then got real sick :( the movie rocked though. if you haven't seen the Borat movie, go see it! it was fucking hilarious, though i felt it probably could've been 20 minutes shorter and would've still been awesome.

here's me all proud-like because my silver casting for class came out great, and it's a good thing too seeing as i dropped $110 just on the metal for it :P jewelry making is expensive like WHOA!

i've been thinking of naming my big cat-marsupial-cross-species, gender-fucked character here 'adonis' which is not quite as loaded a name as tiresieus, but is still pretty queer in it's own way (adonis was aphrodite's lover because he was the fairest, and prettiest boy around, so it's sort of appropriate to a faggy little boi-dyke like me :)

this was just a quick sketch i did in class while i waited for my casting flask to heat up. playing with oxy-acetaline torches is fun, fun, fun!

did a buch of scanning today, so i thought i'd post some scketchy scketches. i'll break it up into a couple posts so it's not an overload.

this is a drawing based on an actual experience from work a couple weeks ago. some sorrority girl entirely out of her element wandered into my scuzzy little dive and proceeded to bitch loudly about how terrible the ambient electronic music was, while everybody else who was enjoying it gritted their teeth.

all the little street urchin critters are based on actual customers (shh... don't tell them, the hippy-skunk might take it personally :3) i doubt i'll bother with inking and coloring this one, just for fun.

a little scketch of tiresieus, i feel this shows some improvement in foreshortening, and in placing limbs, especially.

me an' max in hoodies, and our friend melissa in the corner represented as a "bucket of happy" :)

this is max morphed into a giant evil panda prompted by her enraging communtications students, her least favorite subject to tutor. also, a little shrinky transformation sequence back to normal max :) hee, hee! the train of smoky spirals stolen direcly from jhonen vasquez's poop-dog.
